Meet Emma Keen, the courageous shop manager at Helly Hansen Bridgend who embarked on an unforgettable journey to the Everest Base Camp, all for a cause very close to her heart. Here’s her remarkable story.

Emma took on the challenge of trekking to the Everest Base Camp, a daunting 120km journey with a total ascent of 19,734 ft. Despite the physical demands, Emma was captivated by taking on this once in a lifetime experience, getting the opportunity to explore the challenging trekking routes around the highest mountain in the world. From hiking on the Khumbu glacier to traversing small villages and suspension bridges. Emma trained for a year in preparation for this challenge.

The trek commenced on World Kidney Day, 14th of March 2024, marking the beginning of a life-changing adventure. However, just four days into the trip, Emma encountered a harrowing experience when she was attacked by a yak in Tengboche village, Nepal. She was airlifted to Lukla airport hospital where she received 10 stitched. Despite the unexpected setback, Emma’s resilience shone through with her determination to complete the trek.

With sheer grit and determination, Emma rejoined her group to conquer the final leg of the journey, this time on horseback. Her perseverance paid off, as she successfully completed the trek, soaking in the magnificence of Mount Everest.

Emma’s motivation extended beyond personal accomplishment; she raised over £4,500 for Kidney Wales, a cause close to her heart. Having witnessed her mother’s struggle with polycystic kidneys and her brother’s being on the transplant waiting list, Emma was deeply committed to making a difference. Her choice to support Kidney Wales was fueled by a desire to contribute to the cause and raise awareness about kidney health.

Reflecting on her journey, Emma shared, “It was important that I continue with the trek, as it meant so much to me. Before I headed out for the flight, I could imagine myself at base camp – something I had been training for and looking forward to for over a year.”

Kidney Wales expressed admiration for Emma’s extraordinary efforts, describing her as nothing short of remarkable. Despite facing adversity, Emma’s resilience and spirit left a lasting impression. Her dedication to making a difference and raising awareness for kidney health exemplifies the true spirit of compassion and generosity. In the words of Kidney Wales, “Thank you for your extraordinary efforts in making a difference and raising awareness and funds for the cause. We couldn’t be prouder of you, Emma.”
