Community Afternoon Tea in Llanelli Raises £423 for Kidney Wales

On Thursday 6th of March, the Sea-side Social Club in Llanelli hosted its annual afternoon tea event, raising an impressive £423 in support of Kidney Wales. The event, organised by Marlene Brown, has become a much-anticipated tradition each March, marking both World Kidney Day and the anniversary of Marlene’s life-changing kidney transplant. This year, she celebrated nine years since receiving the priceless gift of a kidney from her brother, Steven.
What started as a small gathering with homemade cakes, tea, and coffee has grown significantly over the years. Now, with the support of her coffee morning friends, Marlene provides a full homemade buffet alongside an array of delicious cakes. The event brings together family, friends, and the local community, all eager to enjoy an afternoon of great food and good company.
A highlight of the fundraiser this year was the Easter-themed raffle, which includes a handmade hamper filled with seasonal treats. Guests also take part in fun games such as guessing the names of a doll, rabbit, or teddy bear. This year, a friend kindly donated a beautifully knitted sailor doll as an extra prize.
For Marlene, supporting Kidney Wales is deeply personal. Having experienced the debilitating effects of kidney failure firsthand, she understands the exhaustion, breathlessness, and relentless hospital appointments that come with the condition. Despite often appearing well on the outside, she knows how life-altering kidney disease can be.
“I was incredibly lucky that my brother, Steven, offered to donate his kidney to me,” Marlene shares. “It’s a gift that money can’t buy, and I am eternally grateful.” Each year, she marks the anniversary of her transplant with a celebration, not only in gratitude for her second chance at life but also to raise awareness and support for others facing similar challenges.
The annual afternoon tea continues to grow, bringing the community together in a shared mission to support Kidney Wales and increase awareness of kidney disease. With each passing year, Marlene’s dedication to the cause ensures that more people understand the realities of kidney failure while helping to make a difference for those affected.
