Kidney Wales welcomes Welsh Government’s new programme to improve early identification and treatment of CKD
Kidney Wales welcomes the Welsh Government’s launch of a new two-year programme designed to improve the early identification and treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD) across Wales. The initiative recognises the importance of early detection and timely intervention in slowing the progression of CKD and reducing its associated health risks. The programme also highlights research from our friends at Kidney Care UK, which found that public understanding of CKD and its strong links to conditions such as diabetes and heart disease continues to remain low.
Increasing the access to effective treatments
A key focus of the Welsh Government’s programme is ensuring that more people are offered effective treatments for CKD, including SGLT2 inhibitors. These medicines can significantly slow the progression of kidney disease and lower the risk of cardiovascular complications.
Across other parts of the UK, the rollout of these important treatments has been slower than expected. We therefore strongly welcome the Welsh Government’s commitment to improving access and ensuring that people in Wales receive the best possible care and treatment for CKD.
