Kidney Wales is committed to offering vital support to those living with kidney disease in Wales, recognising the unique financial, emotional, and daily life challenges patients and their families face. Through four core grant programs, Kidney Wales provides direct assistance to individuals affected by kidney disease and their carers, enhancing their quality of life and relieving some of the burdens they may experience.

In the first six months of this financial year, demand for these grants has reached record levels. Kidney Wales has supported 92 patients and their families with a total of £19,475.77 across various grants. Here’s a breakdown of the support we have provided:

1. Financial Assistance Grant

Kidney Wales offers financial aid of up to £500 per year to help patients manage unexpected expenses and alleviate financial hardship. In the last six months, 25 patients and their families have benefited from this support, with a total of £9,425.77 provided to help cover costs like gas and electricity, washing machines, cookers, beds, and other household furniture.

A recent recipient shared their gratitude, saying:

“Good morning Kidney Wales, Patient X has asked me to pass on a sincere thank you for the recent TV and washing machine. She was so grateful and overwhelmed. Honestly, the support that you provide for our patients can be a lifeline, and I cannot thank Kidney Wales enough.”

2. Wellbeing Food Grant

Good nutrition is vital for patients managing kidney disease, yet accessing and affording quality groceries can be challenging. Kidney Wales offers a Wellbeing Food Grant, providing a £150 grocery voucher once every 12 months to help patients meet their dietary needs. This grant assists patients in prioritising their health without the added stress of food insecurity. In the last six months, 35 patients and their families have benefited from this support, with a total of £5,250.

3. Carers Grant for Paediatric Patients

Recognising the dedication of carers for children with chronic kidney disease (CKD), Kidney Wales offers a £150 voucher to adult carers of young patients. This grant can be used towards a well-deserved break, covering expenses for activities like cinema trips, meals, spa days, or short hotel stays. These moments of rest and relaxation help carers recharge and better support their children. In the last six months, 25 patients and their families have benefited from this support, with a total of £3,750.

4. Carers Grant for Adults

Similarly, for adult carers supporting adult patients with CKD, Kidney Wales provides a £150 voucher for a wellbeing break. Adult carers can use this support for leisure activities, ensuring they have the opportunity for rest and recuperation. By supporting carers, Kidney Wales recognizes the essential role they play in the lives of those managing CKD. In the last six months,7 patients and their families have benefited from this support, with a total of £1,050.
