Be prepared for Storm Eunice

Storm Dudley hit us recently and we are anticipating more adverse weather with Storm Eunice due to come in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

The Met Office has put a red weather warning in place from early Friday morning [https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/about-us/press-office/news/weather-and-climate/2022/red-weather-warning-issued-for-storm-eunice] First Minister Mark Drakeford shared an announcement earlier today stating “We will constantly monitor the situation and will keep the people of Wales updated.”  And urging to “Please make preparations today so you can keep yourself and loved ones safe.”

There are steps we can take to be prepared for the high winds. Particularly for those of us who are vulnerable.

Welsh Water

Register for their free Priority Service, https://www.dwrcymru.com/en/help-advice/priority-services.  If you need water for home dialysis, letting Welsh Water know means that if your water supply is interrupted for any reason, they will make sure you are treated as a priority.

Western Power

Sign up for Western Powers free Priority Service Register.

https://www.westernpower.co.uk/customers-and-community/priority-services/benefits-of-being-on-our-register. You’ll get extra support during a power cut if you need it. You are eligible if you are elderly, very ill or disabled, or rely on power for medical equipment.

Home and Garden

There is still time to check your garden and bring in any items that could be blown away. Have the contact details for your home insurer to hand. Fully close all doors and windows and bring your pets in.

On the Road

If there is a weather warning in place staying off the roads unless there is an emergency is recommended. Park your car away from trees and be sure to check if your children’s schools are open before heading out to drop them in.

Our Patient Information & Support Manager, Brett, shares his home dialysis tips:

  • Do some extra dialysis if you can in case there is a power cut.

  • Have a torch or charged phone next to your dialysis machine so you can see what you are doing if the power goes out and you’re in the dark.

  • If you have been shown how to do a manual washback remind yourself of the process. If the power goes out, and you are not familiar with the doing a manual washback, remove yourself from your machine and contact your home therapies team as soon as possible to let them know.

  • If you have any concerns at all please get in touch with your renal team.
