On May 31st, Nick Wager, a Sergeant at RAF St Athan, embarked on an epic 514.6 mile journey over 5 days to all the renal and dialysis units of Wales in support of Kidney Wales.

Nick is taking on the challenge to support his wife, Melanie who is a Kidney Patient at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff. Melanie has lived with renal failure for the past 22 years and has been waiting for her 3rd kidney transplant for the past 5 years. Unlike most people suffering with renal failure, Melanie is able to dialyse at home. This is only possible with the support of her husband Nick, who juggles his full time career with caring for her.

Speaking of her husband’s support, Melanie said:

“Nick has supported me through thick and thin. However, I live in hope that tomorrow might be the day my phone rings calling me to the hospital. Tomorrow might be the day I stop monitoring every mouthful I eat and every millilitre I drink. Tomorrow might be the day my husband stops being my carer and goes back to being my partner. Tomorrow might be the day I no longer depend upon a machine to keep me alive.”

Commenting on why he is taking on the relentless 5 day cycle, Nick said:

“Every penny is important for Kidney Wales, but I feel it is also important to raise awareness. Joining the Organ Donor Register could make such a difference to someone like my wife, by giving her another chance of life.”

Executive Chairman of Kidney Wales, Roy J. Thomas said:
