Well-being vouchers support patients across Wales

In February, Kidney Wales launched a Well-being Voucher project with the generous support of the Moondance Foundation. The purpose of the project was to promote the importance of self-care and offer a small gesture of care in these particularly challenging times.

Now that more than 50% of the available funding has been spent, we are delighted to see and hear about the positive impact the vouchers are having on patients in Wales.

A transplant patient living in Newport was nominated by Clinical Psychologist, Dr Catherine O’Leary, to receive the gift of a voucher for home delivery of an afternoon tea from Portmeirion in North Wales. Since shielding was introduced in March 2020, the patient has left his house only eight times and has not been able to enjoy afternoon tea, a past time shared with his wife:“I can’t thank you enough for the voucher for the afternoon tea from Portmeirion, my wife and I enjoyed ourselves so much, it was quite emotional.  It brought back happy memories from when we visited with my Mother many years ago.”

The brilliant Health Care teams at the main centres in Bangor, Wrexham, Glan Clwyd, Swansea, and Cardiff, as well as the satellite dialysis units,  have been reaching out to patients most in need of additional well-being support and vouchers have been sent to kidney patients across the length and breadth of Wales.

With the help of the Renal Social Workers, Clinical Psychologists and renal teams, Kidney Wales has been able to send over 35 vouchers to Kidney patients in Wales for stores including Hobby Craft and Marks and Spencer’s, credit for sites like Amazon and tickets for family days out.

Laura McGuiness, Renal Social Worker for South Wales, said: “this is a fantastic scheme and it’s been so amazing to be able to put in requests for some of our patients who have really had a difficult year.”
