Bringing Kidney Care Closer: New Equipment Transforms patient care thanks to Kidney Wales Funding - Kidney Wales

Patients undergoing dialysis treatment across Swansea Bay will now benefit from quicker, easier, and more comfortable assessments thanks to funding from our NHS Equipment fund, that we piloted last year.

Earlier this year, we invited renal units across Wales to apply for a share of the  £20,000 NHS Equipment Fund, which was designed to support equipment purchases that directly improve patient care. The Renal Vascular Access Team in Swansea Bay UHB was awarded funding to purchase two vital pieces of equipment – a finger pressure monitor and a portable ultrasound scanner.

But what does this mean for patients?

The finger pressure monitor is a clever piece of kit that checks the blood flow through a patient’s fistula or graft. By spotting any issues early, our team can act quickly to prevent problems that might stop dialysis from working effectively. The portable ultrasound scanner is equally game-changing. Instead of patients having to travel to hospital imaging departments, with some coming from as far as Aberystwyth to Morriston Hospital, our SBU renal team can now carry out detailed vein and artery assessments right at the bedside. This reduces travel time and stress, and ensures patients get the care they need without delay.

Sarah Siddell, Directorate Manager for Renal, said:

“The funding has allowed us to bring essential diagnostic tools directly to our patients, improving their experience and the quality of care we can provide. This investment will make a real difference to the lives of those undergoing dialysis.”

Lewis Bradley, Charity Support Manager at Swansea Bay Health Charity, added:

“We would like to thank Kidney Wales for the opportunity to grant funding. Both machines will allow us to give a better patient experience throughout the areas that we serve. Collaboration is key, and this is a fantastic example with a successful outcome.”

Ross Evans, CEO of Kidney Wales, shared:

“The funding awarded for a finger pressure monitor and portable ultrasound scanner is a perfect example of how targeted funding can make a real and immediate impact to patient care. It reflects our ongoing commitment to backing the incredible work of NHS professionals, including the renal vascular access team and shows through collaboration we can ensure that kidney patients across Wales receive the highest standard of care possible.”

We’re so pleased to be able to support the Swansea Bay UHB Renal Vascular Access Team, and thank them for their dedication to providing outstanding patient-centred care.
