Meet Chloe: A #TeamKidney Wales Runner and Renal Nurse in the Making
Chloe, a student nurse from Swansea, is on the verge of starting her first job in Nephrology and Dialysis as a Renal Nurse—a dream she’s been working tirelessly toward. Alongside her studies, Chloe is also a volunteer ambassador for Kidney Wales, a role that has connected her to an inspiring community and a cause close to her heart.
Her passion for the kidneys began with a fascination for how they work and the vital role they play in the body. But her connection to kidney health became deeply personal two years ago when Chloe faced a life-changing diagnosis.
“I was admitted to hospital with suspected meningitis and low kidney function,” she recalls. “After countless tests, blood work, and kidney biopsies, I was diagnosed with vasculitis—something I had never heard of before. Since then, my health has continued to deteriorate, and I’ve undergone various types of immunotherapy to manage my condition.”
Over the past two years, Chloe has faced many challenges. She’s been admitted to intensive care five times in just the last year and continues to undergo treatment for her condition. Despite this, she remains determined.
“I’ve had major setbacks, especially in my nursing degree,” she says. “I had to put my dreams on hold for 18 months due to ill health, but I haven’t let it stop me. I’m back now, and I’m ready to keep going.”
A Community That Cares
Through her journey, Chloe has found strength in the kidney community, particularly through her role with Kidney Wales. “I have been welcomed as a volunteer ambassador and have met some of the most inspiring people there is!” she says.
The support from Kidney Wales has shown Chloe that no matter what she’s going through, she is not alone. “Without charities like Kidney Wales, the world of ill health becomes a much scarier and lonelier place,” Chloe explains. “With Kidney Wales, you come to realise that no matter what you’re facing, there is light at the end of the tunnel after all.”
Fundraising with Purpose
Fundraising is another area where Chloe has made a huge impact. “I absolutely love fundraising,” she says. “Over the last few years, I’ve raised thousands of pounds for causes in East Africa, including transforming an empty school ground into a colourful playground for the local children. There’s something so special about fundraising, and when it has a connection as strong as this, it gains so much more meaning.”
This year, Chloe has joined #TeamKidney Wales for the Cardiff 10K. It’s not just about fitness for her—it’s a way to challenge herself and support a cause she holds dear. “I’m excited to prove that I can do anything I put my mind to and that no amount of ill health can get in the way of my dreams.”
Looking Ahead
Chloe is determined to continue making a difference, both as a renal nurse and a passionate advocate for the kidney community. She credits Kidney Wales with helping her stay motivated and connected.
“There may be times it’s difficult,” she says, “but once you’ve faced fear, nothing is ever as hard as you think.”
For Chloe, the Cardiff 10K is just another step in her journey to show that resilience and hope can overcome any obstacle.
